The first step is to register for the exam. Most people will opt for the TOEFL IBT that is TOEFL computer-based exam and it occurs about 50 times a year. How difficult is TOEFL?

The more you prepare the better you will do. Each section is difficult for different students. For example, some may find the reading section difficult.

 The reading section has 3 to 4 passages with 12 to 14 questions on each section. The reading passages will be academic like those you will find in university classes. These passages can be a little difficult not only for non-natives but also for the natives. So, it needs thorough preparation.

The listening section will have 6 to 7 recordings which will be academic too, it might be a conversation between a professor and a student. You only get to listen to the audio once which is very dense and sometimes it is difficult to understand the accent. So, you would have to take notes as you listen and be prepared for the questions at the end.

Many students find speaking to be the most stressful part of the test. There are six questions and you are supposed to speak them through the headset. Since you have to be natural there is no need to prepare too much. Do not memorize answers because your answers do not need to be artificial

On TOEFL writing there are 20 mins for one essay and 30 mins for the other essay. You can revise your essay and go back to it when you want.

How is the TOEFL scored?

For each section, you can get a maximum score of 30. So, it all adds up to 120. Since most questions are multiple choice questions for reading and listening there is simply a score for each correct answer. There is no negative marking so don’t leave any question blank, simply take a guess. The speaking and writing questions are not multiple-choice questions and you are graded based on your performance.

What is s good score on TOEFL?

A good average score is above 84. A good score is one that helps you meet your goal. Most universities ask for a score of 100. Some students aim a score of 120 which is a perfect score but needs a great amount of preparation.
